The Debt Collector
SHORT DOCUMENTARY
During lockdown, the New York office of my agency was embarking on a project called ‘The Vulnerable Creator’. They wanted short films from around the world that explored the mantra: ‘Without vulnerability, there is no creativity’.
Loren Prendiville (director) and I came up with this idea, based on a very interesting woman we had met on K Road the year before.
Leanne is a 57-year-old debt collector who lives in Auckland. She loves a yarn, cask wine, and cats. But under the surface lies a powerful force, and every Tuesday night, it comes out to play.
As writer and art director, I wanted to challenge the viewer’s perception of Leanne, by providing a layered picture of her that isn’t what you’d see at a glance. I wanted the viewer to feel as if they were really there on that Tuesday, in her smoke-filled apartment, feeling the textures and smelling the scents of it all.
